National Grid says increased use of electric vehicles could increase peak electricity demand in the UK by 5 to 8 GW
    by 2030.

Electric vehicles will increase peak electricity demand in the UK by 5-8 GW by 2030

Last year, the government said it would ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 to help reduce air pollution and help the UK reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent
    by 2050 from 1990 levels.

According to National Grid's annual Future Energy Scenario report, while some conventional cars will continue to exist, the number of electric vehicles (including cars, motorcycles, vans and buses) could increase to 11 million by 2030 and 36 million by 2040
    .

As a result, electricity demand will increase, initially driven by the charging of electric vehicles and subsequently increasing
with the pace of decarbonization of the heating industry.

Under the scenario that the UK meets its 2050 carbon reduction targets, additional peak electricity demand could be between
    5 and 8.
    1 GW by 2030.
This is an increase of 9%-14% from the UK's peak electricity demand in 2017 to 57 GW
    .

National Grid added that this also takes into account residential and non-residential charging and relies on the use of smart charging technology to charge
    vehicles during off-peak hours.

After 2030, vehicle-to-grid technology will help electric vehicles power homes, helping to further reduce additional peak power demand
    .

"This year's analysis shows that through smart charging and vehicle-to-grid technology, electric vehicles will be able to support the continued growth
of renewable energy by storing excess generation and releasing it back into the grid when needed.
