Children have researchers using WGS and phylogenetic analysis to clarify the population structure of Staphylococcus aureus CC9 from different regions of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, and to investigate IHO pigs in North Carolina and those working or living near IHO.Researchers have been collecting samples of Staphylococcus aureus from pigs, farm workers, family members of farm workers, and community residents (including children) in recent years, all of which are located in counties with the most pigs in North Carolina.

"We found that these livestock-related Staphylococcus aureus strains have many genes that are resistant to antimicrobial drugs commonly used in the industrialized pig production system in the United States," the first author of the study, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School Environment Said Dr.

In recent years, Heaney and his colleagues have been collecting Staphylococcus aureus isolates from pigs and farm workers on large-scale pig farms in North Carolina (one of the leading states in the pig industry in the United States).
In this new study, they performed whole-genome sequencing of 49 Staphylococcus aureus isolates to describe the characteristics of these strains at the DNA level and obtain a more precise relationship between them.

The researchers also determined from their analysis that the CC9 isolate from North Carolina is closely related, in many cases implying recent pig-to-human transmission.
The scope of the study did not include the assessment of Staphylococcus aureus-related diseases in the infected community, but a pig farm worker with a CC9 barrier in his nose recently reported a skin infection.
The reference data set in this study may be useful for future investigations of worker and community health issues related to the spread and acquisition of LA-SA CC9, whether in North Carolina or other areas with higher IHO density in the United States.
