In the United States, approximately 40 million enhanced CT scans are performed every year.
At this stage, there are only few studies that support routine fasting preparations before enhanced CT scans.
This study is a randomized controlled trial and included inpatient non-emergency patients who underwent enhanced CT scans.
The study finally included 1080 people in the fasting group and 1011 people in the non-fasting group.
Table 1 Participants' frequency of adverse symptoms after intravenous and oral contrast agents (n = 1257).
Table 1 Participants' frequency of adverse symptoms after intravenous and oral contrast agents (n = 1257).
Table 2 Participants in the non-fasting group (n = 1011) experienced nausea and vomiting after eating solid food or liquid within 1 hour before CT scan and within 1 to 4 hours.
Table 2 Participants in the non-fasting group (n = 1011) experienced nausea and vomiting after eating solid food or liquid within 1 hour before CT scan and within 1 to 4 hours.
This study shows that not fasting before the enhanced CT scan is not associated with a higher risk of aspiration pneumonia or a significant increase in the incidence of adverse gastrointestinal symptoms.
