Europe's most powerful floating solar PV plant was inaugurated in the south of France on Friday (October 18), marking another milestone
in solar development.
The Rhône Valley in the south of France is known
for its excellent wines and fine food.
Now, it can also add solar energy to its list
of attractions.
Called O'MEGA1, the floating solar PV plant, with an installed capacity of 17 MW, was launched in 2014 and has an annual output sufficient to meet the electricity needs of 4,733 households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions
by 1,096 tons.
The project is unique
in several ways.
First of all, it is the largest power station
in Europe based on floating solar technology.
According to its promoters, the floating structure helps reduce conflicts over land use because it can be installed on
drinking water reservoirs, industrial pools, floodplains or quarry lakes.
Secondly, the solar power plant also innovates in terms of local communities, inviting citizens to participate in the project
.
The plant was the first in France whose capital was open to natural persons who own premises in Vaucluse or neighboring departments
.
Solar PV developer Akuo Energy Chairman and Co-founder Eric Sc?? "Today, in addition to building Europe's largest floating solar power plant, we are showing that tackling climate change requires a collective effort
," Otto said.
”
"The aim of this approach is to encourage citizens to use stakeholders in the region to participate in the financing
of the energy transition," Akuo said in a statement.
