, published online in the journal Nature Medicine, found that exposure to the dust microbiome of farm houses may be associated with a lower risk of asthma in urban children.
asthma has been linked to urbanization, possibly because key house dust microbe species have been lost during urbanization, and these microbes are still present on farms. However, it was not clear whether the presence of farm bacteria in urban settings was also associated with a decline in asthma prevalence.
Pirkka Kirjavainen of the Finnish National Institute of Health and Welfare and colleagues studied the house dust microbiome in the homes of 395 children in rural and suburban Finland and found a unique pattern of microbial abundance associated with farm homes. The authors then repeated the findings in a queue of 1,031 German children, who found that children living here had a lower risk of asthma if the indoor microbiome in non-farm homes was similar to those in Finnish farm homes.
the observational study did not determine whether individual microbial species could directly prevent asthma, but further confirmed the role of environmentally sourced bacteria in asthma development. The authors believe that measuring the microbiome composition of residential areas may be useful in assessing and monitoring the risks associated with asthma in suburban and urban children.
