Final demand case submitted for the submarine cable project in the Western Islands of Scotland

The submarine cable will provide around 600 megawatts of new capacity and could be laid
by 2023 if approved by Ofgem (UK electricity and gas office).

SSEN has conducted a "comprehensive analysis" of Ofgem's investment options, which can be used to meet "a credible set of future development scenarios"
    for the western islands.

However, the project relies on two planned large-scale wind projects
    .
The wind power project will be supported
by subsidies from the UK government for next year's CFD auction.

Dave Gardner, SSEN's Director of Transmission, said: "We believe the proposal for a submarine cable represents a strong economic case that offers the best opportunity
to strengthen the renewable potential of the western islands.
There are still many hurdles to overcome, not least the requirement to generate enough renewable energy capacity to ensure that CFD auction contracts can support the investment case
