Food prices in South Africa as a whole will rise by 17% in 2020, well above the 3.2% inflation rate for the year, according to a new study by the Peter Marizburg Group for Economic Justice and Dignity (PEJDG), according to the South African business technology website.
December 2020, South African households paid a total monthly price of 4002.42 rand for a package of food, slightly lower than November's figure, but up nearly 520 rand from December.
notably, the sharp rise in the price of staple foods has led to a sharp rise in the cost of food baskets, with sugar beans, rice, bread and flour rising by 68%, 67.2%, 34.3% and 32.9%, respectively.
cost of food for 4,000 rand is already well above South Africa's legal minimum wage (3,500 rand), and the 30.4 million people living below the poverty line (1,268 rand a month) are already overwhelmed.
