From 2004 to 2017, global investment in renewable energy reached $2.9 trillion

According to a new report released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), global investment in renewable energy has cumulatively reached $2.

since 2004.

According to UNEP's Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment Report 2018, solar energy was the most popular renewable energy investment sector
in 2017.

"In 2017, 98 GW of new solar capacity was added globally, much higher than the net increase
in other renewables, fossil fuels and nuclear," the report said.

Global solar investment grew 18% to $160.
8 billion in 2017, with China's new 53GW of capacity being a huge contributor

China accounts for more than half of the world's new solar capacity, with total input costs reaching US$86.
6 billion, up 58%
from 2016.

The report said 2017 was the eighth consecutive year
of investment in renewable energy exceeding $200 billion.

Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment, said: "The massive increase in solar investment shows that the global energy map is changing and, more importantly, the economic benefits
of this shift.
