Medical Network, July 1st, the World Health Organization announced on the 30th that China has obtained the malaria-free certification issued by the organization
.
The WHO praised China from reporting 30 million cases of malaria every year in the 1940s to the complete elimination of malaria after 70 years of hard work, which is a remarkable achievement
.
"Today, we congratulate the Chinese people for eliminating malaria," said WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus
.
"Their hard-won success was achieved after decades of targeted and sustained action
.
China has joined more and more countries, showing the world that a malaria-free future is a viable goal
.
" The WHO pointed out on its official website on June 30 that China is the first country to obtain malaria-free certification in the WHO Western Pacific Region in more than 30 years
.
Other countries in the region that have obtained this certification include Australia (1981), Singapore (1982) and Brunei (1987)
.
Globally, 40 countries and regions have obtained the WHO's malaria-free certification
.
Malaria elimination certification is the official recognition of a country’s malaria-free status by WHO
.
If a country proves with strict and credible evidence that the local malaria transmission chain caused by Anopheles mosquitoes has been blocked nationwide for at least the past three consecutive years, the WHO will grant the certification
.
The WHO detailed China’s practices and experience in eliminating malaria, saying that China’s journey to eliminate malaria began in the 1950s, and the antimalarial drug artemisinin was discovered in the 1970s
.
In the 1980s, China became one of the first countries in the world to extensively try to use medicated mosquito nets to prevent malaria
.
With the support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, starting in 2003, China has strengthened training, staffing, laboratory equipment, medicines and mosquito control to further reduce the number of cases
.
Within 10 years, the number of cases dropped to about 5000 cases per year
.
In 2020, after reporting zero local cases for four consecutive years, China applied for the official certification of the World Health Organization to eliminate malaria
.
The WHO pointed out that the key to China's success is to provide residents with basic public health services for free
.
In China, all people have access to affordable malaria diagnosis and treatment services
.
Effective multi-sector cooperation is also the key to success
.
In addition, China has strengthened malaria surveillance in high-risk areas and has actively participated in regional malaria control measures
.
Pedro Alonso, Director of WHO's Global Malaria Programme, pointed out: "For decades, China has been able to break out of its inherent thinking mode.
This has played a very good role in China's response to malaria, and it has also produced a significant chain reaction around the world
.
The Chinese government and people have been looking for innovative ways to speed up the progress of malaria elimination
.
" Kasaijian, Regional Director of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, also congratulated China on the elimination of malaria
.
He said, “China’s unremitting efforts to achieve this important milestone show that firm political commitment and strengthening of the national health system can eliminate this disease that was once a major public health problem
.
China’s achievements move us towards a malaria-free The vision of the Western Pacific Region has taken another step forward
.
