Furukawa Electric said it will start a new plant in Mexico to produce automotive wiring harnesses, which will be put into operation for mass production
this fall.
It is understood that the automotive wiring harnesses produced by the plant will be used to meet the order demand
for new models of Japanese cars produced in Central America.
Located in Guanajuato, Mexico, the automotive harness production plant is Furukawa Electric's second production plant under FASM, a local subsidiary of Furukawa Electric in the state, just tens of kilometers
away from the first plant.
Furukawa Electric has invested hundreds of millions of yen in this automotive wiring harness production plant, and when completed, the plant will have a floor area of 9,000 square meters and create employment
for 1,200 people.
With the completion of the automotive wiring harness production plant, FASM's workforce in Guanajuato, Mexico, will increase to
2,500.
But according to Furukawa Electric, the new production plant will still leave plenty of room
for expansion.
It is understood that because the production process of automotive wiring harnesses is more cumbersome, Furukawa Electric chose to build and produce in Mexico, where land is cheap and labor costs are low in the Americas, and then sell its products to the United States and other North and Central American countries
by virtue of its geographical advantages.
Currently, Furukawa Electric has four plants in Mexico in the production field of automotive parts business, and the fifth is currently starting construction
