Brazilian mining company Vale said Wednesday that global demand for nickel will increase by 44 percent
by 2030 compared to this year's forecast due to strong demand for electric vehicle batteries.

"With the energy transition, demand for nickel is expected to increase rapidly this decade," the company said in a statement, adding that the new forecast demand would reach 6.

The company also estimates that its own medium-term nickel production should reach 230,000 to 245,000 tonnes per year, compared to an expected production of 190,000 tonnes
    in 2022.

The growth in nickel supply should be mainly driven
by Indonesia and Canada, where the company operates locally, as well as Australia.

Vale added that global demand for copper – also used in car batteries and renewable energy systems – is also expected to grow by about 20 percent to 37 million tonnes
    by 2030.

Medium-term forecasts for copper are between 390,000 and 420,000 tonnes per year, while forecasts for 2022 are as high as 285,000 tonnes
    .
The company also expects a "structural shortage" of copper in the medium to long term, with "increased demand, combined with a lack of supply as the main factor
