According to Shell, global LNG demand is expected to reach 384 million tonnes
in 2020.
The company on Monday unveiled its 2019 LNG outlook, forecasting an increasing
number of supply and demand.
Natural gas is gaining popularity for environmental reasons: when used to generate electricity, it emits 45 to 55 percent
fewer greenhouse gas emissions than coal.
It is therefore flexible to seasonal and short-term demand and compensates for the decline
in renewable supply.
Shell expects more than 70% of its energy needs to be covered
by natural gas and renewables by 2035.
Developing countries are slowly turning to this energy source to meet the goals of
the Paris Agreement.
China became the world's largest gas importer in 2018, doubling
the amount of liquefied natural gas in just two years.
The government's goal is to improve urban air quality, an effort in Beijing that has improved winter air by 78 percent
in five years.
Beijing reduced CO2 emissions by 176 million tons
.
Bangladesh, Panama and Gibraltar became LNG importers in 2018, replacing oil-fired power generation and meeting existing and new gas demand
.
Shell said 42 countries around the world currently import natural gas
.
It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4%
over the next 15 years.
"We have seen LNG demand growth in Asia exceed expectations again in 2018 and we expect this strong growth to continue
.
Investment in new supply projects is increasing, but more will be needed soon," Maarten Wetselaar, director of Integrated Gas and New Energies, said
in a press release.
