Greece plans to invite investors to build battery energy storage systems with a total storage capacity of 700 megawatts
later this year, Greece's energy minister said Tuesday.
Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said at the conference that Greece will launch a tender for battery energy storage systems in the autumn with a budget of 200 million euros
.
Greece aims to increase the share of renewables in final energy consumption to 35% by 2030, up from around 20% last year, as it plans to close all but one by 2023 to help reduce carbon emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels
.
Greece will also seek to produce hydrogen, Skrekas said, adding that a "roadmap" for the technology will be published
in July.
Athens plans to spend around €5 billion over the next five years from the EU's post-pandemic recovery plan to upgrade its power grid, restore coal mines, set up charging piles for electric vehicles and improve the energy efficiency
of private and public buildings.
