According to the Guyana Power Company GPL, the Guyana submarine cable system has completed restoration work
.
Previously, the 69 kV submarine cable system connecting the Vreed-en-Hoop and Kingston substations was disrupted by a ship anchor, causing a temporary disruption
to operations.
GPL said maintenance crews had arrived at the site for initial testing and began repairs the next day, with repairs scheduled to be completed by Christmas
.
At the end of November, the GPL has revealed that Chinese cable manufacturers will assemble a team of engineers and experts to arrive in Guyana to work on submarine cable
repairs.
According to preliminary tests, the cause of the cable failure was that the ship accidentally injured the cable when it broke anchor and dragged a distance, causing the cable to
break.
In addition, routine maintenance work by the GPL for Garden-of-Eden, Vreed-en-Hoop and Kingston power stations has been completed
this year.
Since energy demand rises during Christmas, the GPL will guarantee cable repairs before Christmas to ensure that electricity usage returns to normal
during the holiday season.
GPL said it will have a total available generation capacity of 155MW, with an expected peak demand of 130MW, with the remaining 25MW including operational standby and generation backup
.
On the 22nd local time, Guyana Prime Minister Phillips announced that the repair of the damaged cable has been completed and will be tested
later that day.
The 69kV submarine cable connects GPL's Vreed-en-Hoop and Kingston substations and allows power to be transmitted to the Demerara-Berbice Interconnect System (DBIS).
The prime minister said this meant Guyanese along the coast could expect a steady supply of electricity for Christmas
