From 26 to 27 March, the Sino-British Dialogue on Genetic Technology Policy, co-organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, was held at the Royal Society's headquarters in London.
2009 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry and President of the Royal Society Venkatraman Ramakrishnan met with representatives of both sides and had an in-depth exchange. The
conference was co-chaired by Robin Lovell-Badge, fellow of the British Academy of Medical Sciences and president of the Chinese Society of Plant Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology, and Chen Xiaoya, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
a total of more than 30 renowned scientists and management experts from the Royal Society, the British Research Council, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ukranian Food Standards Agency, the Lausanne Institute, the John Innes Centre, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College, the University of Edinburgh and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chinese Association of Science and Technology, the Chinese Agricultural University, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other institutions participated in the seminar.
Jiang Sunan, Minister of Science and Technology of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom, was also invited to attend the meeting.
2015, former Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Paul Nurse, former president of the Royal Society, proposed strengthening scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries.
2016, the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Bai Chunli, and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan agreed that in order to meet the common challenges facing the world and the two countries, the two sides will conduct policy discussions, strengthen cooperation research in key scientific areas, provide scientific evidence for the formulation of new policy agendas, and develop groups of Chinese and British scientists who can make policy recommendations for decision makers.
this policy dialogue on gene technology is the first in a series of policy seminars.
in recent years, the development and application of gene technology has entered a new stage, represented by the breakthrough of genome editing technology and synthetic biology technology.
focusing on five topics related to genetic technology, crop improvement, animal breeding, synthetic biology, China-UK policy framework, public participation, etc., scientists and management experts from both sides introduced the latest advances in the development of subversive technologies such as genome editing and synthetic biology, exchanged policies, systems and standards related to genetically modified plants or animal management in China and the Ukranous, shared the experiences and practices of the scientific community in helping and guiding public participation and understanding of gene technology development, and discussed priority areas of research in gene technology.
participants believe that in recent years, China and the United Kingdom have made important progress in the use of genome editing technology for the improvement of the characteristics of major crops and poultry and livestock, molecular module breeding, genomics of important crop varieties, biological control technology, microbial genome synthesis, synthetic biology technology production of natural products and chemicals, some of the results of the world's attention.
research to put forward relevant policy recommendations, accelerate the application of genetic technology in plants, animals, microorganisms, to promote agriculture, industry and economic development of both countries are of great significance.
through in-depth discussions, the two sides reached a number of consensuses on further strengthening scientific data sharing, making policy proposals related to the application of genome editing technology, and strengthening cooperation in synthetic biology technology and commercialization, and defining the next steps.
this policy dialogue mechanism between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society provides a new platform for furthering cooperation between China and the UK in the field of science, technology and policy.
next, the two sides will conduct in-depth exchanges and cooperation in the field of genetic technology, and conduct exchanges and dialogues in areas of common interest, such as low-carbon energy and artificial intelligence.
