China Paint Online News Information: Marine benthic organisms are routinely attached to the bottom of large ships, slowing down travel speeds and increasing the burden of fuel consumption. The research team of Qian Peiyuan of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKSC) has developed a natural anti-fouling coating for the hull, which is protected from biological adhesion and successfully reduces fuel consumption without polluting the environment. The invention came from biofilm-related research, and the team found that marine benthic organisms such as corals and shellfish were affected by chemical signals from biofilms. His research project won the second prize of the National Natural Science Prize.
Qian Peiyuan, a professor in the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Science and Technology, won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award from the State Council of China for his research project "The Impact of Biofilms on Marine Benthic Ecosystems in Changing Environments". Scientists have been focusing on how environmental changes affect marine habitat, but Qian Peiyuan led a team that focused on the relationship between biofilms and the marine environment. Biofilms are a thin film of microorganisms and their secretions that cover all surfaces or have the potential to endanger human health.

Professor Qian showed the effect of its anti-fouling coating, the left smooth surface is the condition after 18 months of use, pictured right is more than two years later Qian Peiyuan after sampling research found that marine benthic organisms such as barnacles, mussel larvae in the ocean to find space for reproduction, mainly depends on the chemical signal released by the biofilm. He established the molecular conduction mechanism used by marine benthic organisms in response to biofilm chemical signals. By manipulating these chemical signals, Mr Chan said, the larvae of benthic organisms could be manipulated to lead marine organisms such as corals, abalone and shellfish to less polluted areas, to provide a part in conservation and to stabilize the entire ecosystem, "protecting endangered species from extinction and reshaping the balance of marine ecology." Withfor the release of biofilms, Qian Peiyuan further used this principle to develop natural anti-fouling coatings. The original barnacles, mussels and other marine life, often attached to the surface of the hull, hindering the operation of ships, slowing the progress of the ship, more fuel to promote driving, in addition to increasing the fuel loss of ships up to 40%, but also release more carbon dioxide, damage the natural environment. Militaryly, stealth warships that could not have been detected by radar, or glued to marine life, could not hide their whereabouts.Ships and warships will generally be coated with anti-fouling paint to prevent adhesion, however, Qian Peiyuan said that the anti-fouling coatings on the market are toxic, even if advertised as organic coatings, but also harmful to the marine environment, and high toxicity, after the removal of paint larvae can not be attached. His first natural anti-fouling coating, which can be degraded in seawater and does not pollute the natural environment, is both environmentally friendly and achieves the same efficiency, and the cost and production process are simple. Qian has so far obtained 12 patents for anti-fouling natural chemicals, is in contact with a number of enterprises and testing, is expected to be used in the industry in the future.
