According to a study to be published on Sunday at the "virtual" European Respiratory Society International Conference [1], warmer weather is associated with worsening chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms

An analysis of data on existing and former smokers of 1,177 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the United States showed that the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease aggravated after the ambient temperature increased for about 2 days

"This study is one of the few studies that explores the impact of environmental temperature on COPD aggravated risks.

"Other studies have shown that in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, there is a link between extreme high temperature exposure and increased health problems and increased risk of death

    Dr.

The average age of the participants was 64 years, and the average time to first attack was 603 days (slightly more than one and a half years)

"Our findings have raised concerns about the increased risks of climate change

The mechanisms involved in the link between high temperature and COPD exacerbations are not fully understood, but may include hyperventilation, which increases the possibility of a process called dynamic hyperinflation
