How ANZ manages food additives

Supervision of Australian and New Zealand food additives

 

The ANZ Food Standards Authority adopts an approval system for food additives, and only additives that pass the approval and are included in the food additive list will be approved for use
in Australia and New Zealand.
The ANZ Food Standards Agency assesses food additives for safety before approving them
.
The ANZ Food Standards Agency's safety assessment process follows an internationally recognised (Codex Alimentarius) model, including hazard (safety) assessments and dietary exposure (consumption levels) assessments
of chemicals.
Approval will only be granted
if it can be demonstrated that harmful effects from the use of food additives are not possible.

 

Second, the types of Australian and New Zealand food additives

 

In Australia and New Zealand, food additives do not include processing aids, vitamins and minerals, of which food additives, processing aids, vitamins and minerals are collectively referred to in Australia and New Zealand as "substances added to food or present in food", which are governed
by different standards in the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards Code (hereinafter referred to as the Code).

 

Third, the use of Australian and New Zealand food additives

 

Chapter I, Part 1.
3 of the Code, "Substances added to or present in food", regulates
the use of food additives, vitamins and minerals, and processing aids.
The Codex standards relating to substances added or present in food are shown
in Table 1.

Fourth, the label of Australia and New Zealand food additives

4 "Requirements for Ingredient Information Claims" specifies the requirements for ingredient claims, including: general requirements for ingredient claims; Common name, descriptive name, genus name of ingredients; The ingredients should be listed in descending order according to the dosage; Claims of substances used as additives, etc

Substances used as food additives must be identified in the ingredient list: if the substance is an additive category listed in Schedule 7 "Food Additive Category Name (for Ingredient Declaration)" (see Table 2 below), the additive must be identified by category name, and the specific name or number of the substance shown in Schedule 8 "Food Additive Name and Number (for Ingredient Declaration)" must be marked in parentheses after the category name, otherwise directly in accordance with Schedule 8 is identified
by the name.
