We all know that drinking alcohol damages the liver

In this latest study, the researchers fed mice stable isotope-labeled ethanol to study ethanol metabolism and track its whereabouts

The results showed that ingested ethanol was broken down into acetate in the liver, released into the blood, and activated more acetate production in the gut

These results suggest that in the absence of alcohol, gut microbiota alterations caused by acetate alone are not sufficient to induce liver damage
