With the development of the economy and the improvement of living standards, obesity has become a major public health problem worldwide

In fact, obesity not only brings inconvenience to life and reduces exercise capacity, it is also a disease

However, we do not fully understand why body organs deteriorate and lose function due to chronic obesity

Recently, researchers from Tokyo Medical and Dental University published a research paper entitled "Obesity accelerates hair thinning through a stem cell-centric aggregation mechanism" in the top international academic journal "Nature"

The study used mouse model experiments to study how obesity caused by a high-fat diet or genetic factors can lead to hair loss

Under normal circumstances, hair follicle stem cells (HFSC) will renew themselves during each hair follicle cycle, which is also part of the process by which our hair can continue to grow

However, with age, hair follicle stem cells gradually cannot replenish themselves, resulting in a gradual decrease in hair follicle stem cells, leading to thinning of the hair

Although overweight people have a higher risk of androgenetic alopecia, whether obesity will accelerate hair loss, its mechanism and molecular mechanism are still unclear

Experimental results show that rats fed high-fat food will consume their hair follicle stem cells, thereby accelerating hair thinning, especially in elderly rats

The study found that the hair follicle stem cells in obese mice changed their fate and became keratinocytes or sebum secreting cells on the skin surface

The study’s corresponding author Emi K.

The research team also said that this also reminds us that activating the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway can save the depletion of hair follicle stem cells and prevent hair loss caused by a high-fat diet

Overall, this research provides interesting new insights into specific cell fate changes and tissue dysfunction that may occur after high-fat diet or genetic obesity, and may open up future ideas for preventing and treating hair loss and understanding obesity-related diseases.
