A new study has looked at the hydrophobic regulation of glass and marble materials with different silicon-based coatings.
polymers that are applied to hydroxylation surfaces improve their durability against adverse weathering processes. Reaching a certain degree of surface hydrophobicity (reducing water penetration) constitutes one of the main research

    .
for the study, two commercial silicone-based resins were used, which were applied directly to glass and Carrara marble substrates, and used tropoxysilane (TCMS) for silaneization. Contact angle measurements and lag determination and surface free energy (SFE) are performed to assess hydrophobic characteristics.
Significantly reduces the amount of water absorbed
so, because good hydrophobicity is obtained only in the case of TCMS (at around 150 degrees), two commercially available polysilicae-based additives are added to Si-based resins according to their chemical compatibness. These aids reduce the wetting of glass or marble. In addition, since all the coatings studied can be used as stone protectors, water capillary absorption and permeability tests have been carried out. Also in this case, TCMS has shown to be one of the highest performing silane-based resins used due to a sharp reduction in water absorption and a decrease in steam penetration within a threshold of 50%.
the study can be found in Progress in Organic Coatings, volume 136, November 2019.
