The researchers are currently investigating whether immunotherapy is beneficial in patients without stage 4 metastatic disea.

"The current standard of care for patients with non-metastatic gastroesophageal cancer includes preoperative chemotherapy plus radiation, followed by surgical removal of the primary tumor and surrounding lymph nodes," said .

"Patients who have experienced this total eradication appear to have a higher chance of cure," .

"If these results can be confirmed in a larger, separate clinical trial, the combination of immunotherapy with standard chemoradiotherapy and surgery could become the new standard for patients with non-metastatic gastroesophageal cancer," said .
