On June 15, the Wall Street Journal reported that the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that renewable energy currently accounts for about 22% of total global power generation, far less than the 41%
of coal power generation.
Almost all countries have agreed to include limits on greenhouse gas emissions in a climate agreement at this year's Paris conference, the first of their kind at UN climate talks, and announced measures include deep cuts in the use of
fossil fuels, especially coal.
According to the report, about half of the world's new electricity in 2014 came from renewable sources, and if countries can reach a climate agreement this year, the proportion of renewable energy generation is expected to increase to 33% by 2030, while the proportion of coal power generation will gradually decline, and renewable energy will replace coal as the largest source
of power generation.
