Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) said that increasingly cheap wind, solar and battery technologies are posing unprecedented challenges to the three roles of fossil fuel power generation: providing large amounts of power generation, dispatchable generation and flexibility
    .

    In the first half of 2018, the cost of onshore wind power and photovoltaic levelized electricity fell by 18%;

According to BNEF's latest report on levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), the global cost of standardised electricity for onshore wind levels was $55/MWh in the first half of 2018, down 18%
from the first half of 2017.
Untracked levelized electricity costs for solar PV also fell 18% to $70/MWh
    .
Offshore wind level level-leveled electricity costs fell 5% to $118/MWh
    .

Meanwhile, BNEF's lithium-ion battery price index fell from $1,000/kWh in 2010 to $209/kWh
    in 2017.

"As the penetration of wind and solar increases, some existing heavily invested coal and gas power stations will continue to play a role in achieving a combination
of massive generation generation and grid balancing.
" Elena Giannakopoulou, head of energy economics at BNEF, said, "The economic case for building new coal and gas capacity is collapsing
as batteries begin to erode the flexibility and peak revenues of fossil fuel power plants.
    " ”

The BNEF said the cost of standardised electricity for onshore wind levels is particularly low
in India, Brazil, Sweden and Australia.
In regions such as Chile, India, Australia and Jordan, the LCOE cost of electricity is very low
    .

In India, for example, the levelized cost of electricity for onshore wind and PV plants was $39/MWh and $41/MWh, down 46% and 45%
    year-on-year, respectively.
Coal costs $68/MWh and combined cycle natural gas costs $93/MWh
    .
BNEF said the cost range of wind or solar plus batteries is wide, but the median of the range is falling
    rapidly.
For wind plus batteries in India, the cost range is $34-208/MWh, while the cost range for solar plus batteries is $47-308/MWh
