According to Indian statistics, in the second quarter of 2021, India's new rooftop solar installations were 521 MW, an increase of 53% month-on-month and 517% year-on-year, a record high
.
Among them, Gujarat has made a significant contribution, with a large number of residential rooftop solar projects coming into use there, accounting for about 55%
of the new installed capacity.
This is followed by Maharashtra and Haryana
.
In the first half of 2021, India added 862 MW of rooftop solar, up 210% year-on-year, mainly due to the impact
of COVID-19 lockdowns on the industry in the first half of 2020.
At present, the installed capacity in the first half of the year has exceeded the 719 MW of rooftop solar capacity
in the whole of 2020.
Market research firm Mercom India believes that if there are no more COVID-19-related headwinds in the second half of the year, then 2021 may be the second largest year
for rooftop solar installations after 2018.
In the second quarter of this year, despite the second wave of the pandemic and lockdowns in policy, installs were significantly higher than in the previous quarter
.
This is mainly because the lockdown was targeted, the industry was well prepared, and installation activities were not affected
much.
As of the end of June 2021, the cumulative rooftop solar installations in India reached 6.

In the second quarter of 2021, more than 130 MW of rooftop solar project tenders decreased 69% sequentially but increased 46%
year-over-year.
During the quarter, Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam, Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam, Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency and West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency issued major rooftop solar tenders

On the other hand, the average cost of rooftop solar systems increased by 3 per cent to Rs 39.

System costs have been rising
since the third quarter of 2020 due to increased component and other costs.
Even as costs rise, consumers are realizing that solar is still cheaper
than retail electricity.
