    India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced medium- and long-term offshore wind targets of 5 GW by 2022 and 30 GW by 2030, boosting industry confidence

    Offshore wind will add new elements
    to India's existing renewable energy package.

    MNRE issued the National Offshore Wind Policy in October 2015 to realize the potential
    of offshore wind.
    Preliminary research suggests that the potential for offshore wind power on the southern tip and west coast of the Indian peninsula is huge
    .

    The two areas where the initial research was conducted were the coasts
    of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
    To make accurate wind measurements, a LiDAR has been installed off the coast of Gujarat, which has been providing data
    on the quality of offshore wind power since November 2017.

    Encouraged by the quality of offshore wind, a private company has also installed LiDAR in Kutch Bay in Gujarat for offshore wind resource surveys

    Plans are under way to install more of this equipment
    in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
    Globally, countries such as the UK, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and China have installed around 17 to 18 GW of offshore wind capacity
