Data recently shared by India's power minister, R K Singh, in Congress, shows that the country's 7,000 megawatt (MW) capacity nuclear power plants are currently under construction
.
The plants under construction include Reactors 3, 4 and 5 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu with a capacity of 3,000 MW, and a prototype fast breeder reactor
with a capacity of 500 MW.
In addition to this, there are two upcoming 1,400 MW nuclear power plants, namely the Kaklapal Atomic Power Plant in Gujarat and the Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant
.
India also plans to plan a 700 MW project Gorakhpur Nuclear Power Plant
in an area of 560 hectares west of Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district of Haryana.
In October 2019, KN Vyas, chairman of India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, said India plans to add about 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power capacity
over the next decade.
In the current financial year, the total investment in the central public sector under India's Ministry of Atomic Energy is likely to reach Rs 14,851 crore, with the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation accounting for 98 per cent
of planned expenditure.
