According to Gulf Times, the World Bank’s executive board approved a US$52.
5 million loan for Afghanistan’s natural gas project on Tuesday.
The project will provide a sustainable supply of natural gas to independent power producers in northern Afghanistan.
The statement also stated that the Afghanistan natural gas project will provide direct financing and technical assistance for the construction, operation and maintenance of a natural gas pipeline from Shibirgan to Mazar-i-Sharif and a new natural gas sweetening amine plant.
The project will also provide direct financing and technical assistance to establish a strong institutional, regulatory and contract management framework based on the principles of good governance in the natural gas sector.
Henry Kerali, Director of the Afghanistan Bureau of the World Bank, said: “By investing in critical natural gas infrastructure and laying a solid foundation for good governance in the natural gas sector, this project will improve Afghanistan’s current extremely low energy supply and help reduce poverty.
" At the same time, the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum will coordinate closely with other government agencies, including the Afghan Gas Corporation and the Afghan Petroleum and Gas Authority, to lead the concrete implementation of the project.
