analysis of 176 reported cases suggests that most newborns are infected with the new coronavirus due to environmental exposure, according to a medical study published in the British journal Nature Communications on Monday. The findings also suggest that 30 per cent of reported cases may have been contracted from mothers.Danielle Deluca, a scientist at the University Hospital of Paris-Sakre, and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of published cases of new coronavirus infections in newborns (within 30 days of birth) (i.e., "Meta analysis", which refers to more integrated things that appear later, including not only data binding, but also epidemiological exploration and evaluation of results, replacing individuals as analytical entities with findings from original studies. The viral infection in the study was defined as at least one nasopharyngeal swab test positive and/or a specific antibody detected in the blood. They analyzed 176 cases as of August 30, 2020 and found that 70 percent of the cases were caused by environmental exposure. Thirty per cent may be the result of vertical transmission (the virus is transmitted from mother to baby), and about 9 per cent of the 176 cases have been confirmed to be the result of vertical transmission, and the infection may occur before or during childbirth. In this analysis, 55 percent of infants later developed neo-coronary pneumonia, and the researchers noted that their clinical symptoms appeared to be similar to those reported in older patients, including respiratory symptoms (52 percent of cases), fever (44 percent), gastrointestinal symptoms (36 percent) and nervous system (18 percent). When the researchers analyzed infections that occurred at least 72 hours after birth, they found that babies in the same room as the mother and child in the sample (the cots were placed next to the mother's bed) appeared to have a higher rate of neo-coronavirus infection. They considered that, if mothers and children were in the same room, appropriate hygiene measures and protective equipment should be provided to reduce the risk of transmission due to environmental exposure. The team also noted that breastfeeding is not associated with new coronavirus infections, which they believe are rare, but that further research is needed to confirm this.
