The Montserrat government has signed a deal of 16 million dinars ($5.
9 million) with Southern Caribbean Fiber (SCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Caribbean telecommunications group Digicel, to install a new submarine cable system

Under the agreement, Southern Caribbean Fiber will install a 25-kilometre undersea fibre optic cable connecting Guadeloupe and Antigua for Montserrat, as well as 15 years of operation and maintenance services
.
At the same time, the company will also provide the Government of Montserrat with 10 years of free high-speed broadband Internet access
.
According to the plan, SCF will complete the installation of the new submarine cable system by the
summer of 2020.
For more than 20 years after the eruption of Montserrat, Montserrat has been without international fibre-optic connectivity

The volcano Soufriere Hills cuts off the island's submarine branch
from the Eastern Caribbean Fibre System (ECFS).
Since then, all international telephone and data communications in Montserrat have been routed to Antigua
via the microwave network.
