Israel's Ministry of Communications recently issued an announcement setting a timetable for the retirement of
the country's traditional 2G and 3G networks.
"Against the backdrop of the accelerating pace of development of cellular network technology and the scarcity of frequencies in the State of Israel, the ministry has decided to shut down 2G and 3G networks
by December 31, 2025," the regulator said.
According to the announcement, Israel will complete the shutdown
of 2G and 3G networks in three steps.
In the first phase, starting January 1, 2022, commercial imports of mobile devices
that only support older technologies are prohibited.
In the second phase, starting January 1, 2023, operators must stop connecting new mobile devices to networks that only support older technologies, including in-vehicle hands-free devices and M2M devices
.
Notably, operators will be required to offer 2G and 3G services
to existing subscribers before the network shuts down.
The third phase, the final shutdown of 2G and 3G networks
nationwide by December 31, 2025.
