ExxonMobil Expands Refining and Chemical ProjectExxonMobil
said today that it will invest $2 billion
in adding a plant producing 400,000 tons of polymer per year and an olefin plant producing 350,000 tons of polyethylene, wax and lubricant feedstock in Baytown, Texas, by 2022.
The expansion complements ExxonMobil's $20 billion Gulf Plan announced in 2017
.
This is another step
in ExxonMobil's use of light, sweet crude produced from the Permian Basin of Texas.
Separately, ExxonMobil is expanding its Beaumont refinery in Texas with a production of 365644 barrels per day, adding a 250,000 b/d crude distillation unit to process crude from
the Permian.
Darren Woods, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, said, "Our chemical expansion in Baytown will put us in a strong position to maximize the value of Permian Basin production and will provide our Gulf Coast refining and chemical production facilities with higher demand and higher value products
.
ExxonMobil also announced a more than $1 billion investment to expand the Fawley refinery and chemical plant
in the United Kingdom.
Construction is expected to start by the end of this year, with a new hydrorefining unit to remove sulfur from fuels and a new hydrogen production unit to improve the energy efficiency
of the refinery.
This will increase the refinery's production of ultra-low sulfur diesel by nearly 45 percent, or 38,000 b/d
