BASF to build cathode material plant
in Europe June 27, BASF and Nornickel announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding and conducted exclusive cooperation negotiations
on the future supply of battery materials and raw materials for the European lithium battery industry.
BASF will invest EUR 400 million to build a leading cathode material production plant
in Europe.
According to the expected agreement, BASF will receive raw materials from the Nornickel metal smelter in Harjavalta, Finland, and the Nornickel mine in Russia will guarantee a stable supply
of nickel and cobalt raw materials.
In addition to its leading position in the raw material market, Nornickel will bring a wealth of experience
in metal smelting and trading to this cooperation.
With BASF Toda Battery Materials Co.
, Ltd.
, a joint venture in Japan, and a production facility in Illyria, Ohio, USA, BASF has become an important supplier of cathode materials to
the Asian and U.
S.
markets.
The cooperation with Nornickel will provide BASF with a solid foundation for
the development and growth of the emerging cathode materials market in Europe.
