Covestro plans to build a new chlorine plant in Spain Covestro announced on June 19 that it plans to build a new chlorine plant
for its own consumption in Tarragona, Spain, with construction scheduled to begin in
the first half of 2019.
The new chlorine plant will be the first large-scale plant to fully adopt oxygen decathodification (ODC), a sustainable production technology that reduces energy consumption
by approximately 1/4 compared to conventional processes.
Covestro is investing EUR 200 million to make the Tarragona site more competitive, and the chlorine plant is an important part of
this investment plan.
Klaus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer at Covestro, said: "Sustainability and energy efficiency play an important role
when selecting production processes.
Our company has been developing this technology for more than 20 years, so it is a unique success story
for us.
