Issue 16/2015 - The Environment Committee of the European Parliament adopts legislation restricting biofuels

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament has recently passed new legislation to restrict the use of
biofuels.
The European Union set a target in 2008 for 10% of transport fuels to come from renewable sources by 2020, which led member states to use subsidies for biofuels

Under the new regulations, biofuels can only meet 7% of the 10% target, which currently accounts for about 5% of transport energy, which means that biofuel consumption will also rise
.
Lawmakers want to push for a cap of 6 percent while incorporating a methodology for quantifying land-use change into legislation
.
However, Member States do not wish to introduce land-use change factors into their legislation, and many issues are left to be decided by Member States, which may lead to differences in
enforcement.
The regulations are subject to final approval by
the European Parliament.
