New pore size adjustable nanofiltration membranes are introduced
Recently, researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Institute for Polymer Research have successfully developed a novel nanofiltration membrane with adjustable pore size that can be used to remove trace amounts of pharmaceutical residues
from water.
This new type of polymer membrane can be used in different fields according to its pore size, not only for water purification, but also for medical fields in the future, such as filtering hormones, proteins and nucleic acids and other biomolecules of different sizes, blood purification and so on
.
The nanofiltration membrane is prepared as follows: The researchers first apply a polydopamine binder to the pH-sensitive membrane, and then use a chemical reaction to coat a layer of temperature-sensitive polymer
on top of the adhesive layer.
This polymer is in a swelling state below 25 °C, and will shrink when the temperature is about 35 °C, so that the pore size of the membrane will increase, and the pore size of the nanofiltration membrane will be adjustable
.
Dr.
Juliana Clodt of the Institute said that the pore size of the membrane is between 20~30 nanometers, and its expansion or reduction can be achieved by adjusting the temperature and pH value, which can be used as a fractional separation membrane in the separation process, first through small molecules, and then larger molecules pass through
again.
Currently, Dr.
Juliana Clodt is conducting research
on membrane pore size customization.
This research is part of the European Union's research program for self-assembled polymer membranes, a patent-pending
method for the preparation of this new membrane.
