Some patients believe that ivermectin can cure their severe COVID-19 infection, thus delaying proper treatment

Although Ivermectin has changed the rules of the game for patients with certain infectious diseases, it cannot save patients from COVID-19 infection

Let me tell you a little story about the history of ivermectin

Ivermectin is commonly used to treat and control parasites in animals including horses

Ivermectin was first discovered in the veterinary drug screening project of Merck Pharmaceuticals in the 1970s

Merck cooperates with Kitasato Research Institute, a medical research institution in Japan

The research on abamectin lasted about 5 years

The compounds that make up ivermectin were first discovered in bacteria in the soil of a golf course in Japan

Development of ivermectin for human use

Early experiments by William Campbell of Merck and his team found that the drug is also effective against a human parasite that causes river blindness

River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is the second most preventable cause of blindness in the world

In 1982, Ivermectin was tested for the treatment of river blindness and was approved in 1987

In the 20 years of extensive work in the discovery, development and distribution of ivermectin, people's suffering from river blindness has been greatly reduced

Use the drug for other purposes

Infectious disease researchers often try to use antibiotics and other drugs to treat infections

For many years, Ivermectin has been approved for the treatment of river blindness and has also been proven to be very effective against other parasitic infections

Reuse of COVID-19 drugs

However, not every attempt to reuse drugs can achieve the desired results

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists and doctors tried to find cheap drugs to treat and prevent COVID-19

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are two of these drugs

They were chosen because of their possible antiviral effects in laboratory studies and the limited anecdotal case reports

However, large-scale clinical studies on these drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 have not brought any meaningful benefits

This is partly because the patient experiences severe toxic effects before the drug reaches a high dose sufficient to inhibit or kill the virus

Unfortunately, the lessons learned from these failed attempts have not been reflected on ivermectin

The false hope regarding the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19 stems from a laboratory study in Australia in April 2020
.
Although the results of this study were widely disseminated, some scientists immediately aroused serious suspicions

The concentration of ivermectin they tested was 20 to 2000 times higher than the standard dose used to treat human parasitic infections
.
In fact, within a month of the paper’s publication, many other pharmaceutical experts confirmed their concerns

Such a high concentration of the drug may have obvious toxicity

Another frequently cited paper on the efficacy of ivermectin against COVID-19 was withdrawn in July 2021 after scientists discovered that the study had serious flaws

These deficiencies include incorrect statistical analysis, discrepancies between collected data and published results, duplicate patient records, and subjects who died before entering the study

Even more worrying is that at least two other frequently cited studies have raised serious concerns about scientific fraud

At the time of writing, two large randomized clinical trials have shown that the use of ivermectin for COVID-19 has no significant benefit

Well-known national and international health care organizations, including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the American Academy of Infectious Diseases, have unanimously recommended not to use ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19 , Except in the context of clinical trials

Consequences of using ivermectin to treat COVID-19

Unfortunately, many organizations with suspicious intentions continue to promote the use of ivermectin for COVID-19, but this has not been confirmed

This led to a sharp increase in ivermectin prescriptions, and the US Poison Control Center received a large number of calls from ivermectin overdose

Many of the appeals were due to the intake of large amounts of veterinary products containing ivermectin-two deaths related to ivermectin overdose were reported in September 2021
