Objective: Upregulation of interferon-regulated genes (IRGs) in peripheral blood, expressed as an interferon (IFN) signature, has been used as an indirect measure of IFN pathway activation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE.

Methods: In this study, a research team from Denmark determined the expression of 128 IRGs in whole blood from 34 SLE patients, 11 active lupus nephritis patients and 15 healthy controls in a cross-sectional (CS) stud.

RESULTS: In this cross-sectional study, SLE patients with higher disease activity showed up-regulated IRGs (n = 46) three times as high as other patient.

Conclusions: This study validates the existence of a subpopulation of type I IRGs independent of disease activity in SLE patient.
