Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have an increased tolerance to self-hunger, and the research hypothesizes that the hypothalamus is dysfunctional in regulating energy and glucose balance.
The study enrolled 24 AN patients, 28 normal-weight people, and 24 obese people who underwent 2 MRI examinations.
The results showed that normal-weight control participants showed the expected glucose-induced inactivation of hypothalamic activation, while AN patients and obese individuals showed a decrease in hypothalamic reactivity.
In summary, these results indicate that the hypothalamic glucose-responsive inactivation may be related to the pathophysiology of AN.
