Previous studies on the effects of colon cancer tumor position on the prognosis of colorectal cancer compared only two groups by position, such as "right colon and left colon," "colon and rectum" and "left colon and rectal."
this study hopes to break through by dividing the tumor into three groups: the right colon, the left colon and the rectum, to clarify the prognosis effect of tumor location on patients with stage III colorectal cancer.
study included 9,194 patients with stage III colorectal cancer who underwent root surgery between 1997 and 2012.
the researchers examined all patients for non-recurrence survival (RFS) after initial surgery and total survival (OS) after recurrence.
results showed that rectal cancer (n s 2922) was associated with worse RFS (H)0.65 compared to right colon cancer (n s 2362); 95% CI 0.59-0.72; p.lt;0.001), while the RFS for left-hand colon cancer (n s 3910) is also worse (HR 0.72; 95% CI 0.66-0.78; p.lt;0.001).
in patients with relapse (n - 2823), and rectal cancer was associated with a better OS compared to right colon cancer (HR 1.23; 95% CI 1.08-1.40; p s 0.002).
20% of the right colon cancer recurrence was shown as peritoneal prosthesis, 42% of the recurrence of colon cancer in the left side was liver metastasis, and 33% of the recurrence of rectal cancer was local recurrence.
the three tumor positions (right colon, left colon, rectal) had different prognostic effects on recurrence and overall mortality after root removal, suggesting that tumor location can be used as a prognostic biomarker for stage III colorectal cancer.
