Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with the development of cognitive impairment independent of clinical strok.
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between atrial disease and dementia events, as well as the potential mediators of AF and strok.
We conducted a prospective cohort analysis of participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Community (ARIC) study at follow-up 5 (2011-2013) and used Cox regression to determine the association between atrial disease and dementia ris.
Among the 5,078 participants (mean age 75 years, 59% women, 21% black adults), the prevalence of atrial disease was 34%, of which 763 participants developed dementi.
CONCLUSIONS: Atrial disease was significantly associated with an increased risk of dementia, with only a small proportion of the effect mediated by atrial fibrillation or strok.
