    The World Health Organization estimates that by the end of 2020, the number of people over the age of 60 may outnumber children under the age of 5, reaching 22% of the global population by 2050

    As life expectancy in the global population continues to increase, health systems, social systems and governments have to deal with the burden of chronic disease associated with aging


    Recently, a research article was published in JAHA, an authoritative journal in the field of cardiovascular disease.
    The purpose of this meta-analysis was to (1) elucidate the vascular status measured by IMT and the cognitive domains of overall cognition, executive function, memory and attention.
    (2) to explore whether demographic (ie, age and gender), clinical (ie, BMI and IMT baseline values) and surgical characteristics influence this association
    .

    Researchers searched MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases from inception to June 2021.
    The systematic review included studies that met the following inclusion criteria: (1) participants were adults; (2) exposed The factor was carotid IMT; (3) the outcome was cognitive function, including global cognition, executive function, memory, and attention measured using standardized tests; (4) the study design was cross-sectional or longitudinal, including unadjusted and adjusted post analysis
    .

    A total of 19 cross-sectional studies and 15 longitudinal studies were included in the analysis, and demographic (age and sex), clinical (body mass index and baseline IMT values), and surgical characteristics were identified as potential mediators or moderators of this association
    .


    Data from this meta-analysis support an inverse association between IMT and cognitive function in cross-sectional studies


    CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review and meta-analysis adds to the evidence supporting the use of IMT as an indicator to identify patients at risk for cognitive decline
