    .

Affected patients exhibit memory and executive function problems, similar to deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD)

Major surgery often involves postoperative neurocognitive impairment

The plasma biomarkers of nerve cell damage, including total tau and neurofilament light chain (NFL), suggest that surgery can trigger damage

    • Five men and one woman underwent cardiac surgery, with an average age of 65 years (range 53-83 years)

The results confirmed the previously reported increase in total tau and NFL levels in major surgery patients, and by proving that plasma pTau181 increased in parallel

Tau hyperphosphorylation is related to its accelerated separation from microtubules and aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles, although the relationship between these changes and neuronal dysfunction and death is still under active research

The increase in biomarkers is emphasized in cardiac surgery, which leads to a higher risk of postoperative neurocognitive impairment than non-cardiac surgery
