Suicide is a widespread public health issue and is considered an important issue for the Veterans Health Administration.
2017, the suicide rate among U.S. veterans was 1.5 times higher than among non-veterans, according to a new study.
is a heterogeneic group of sub-groups with unique health needs and experiences.
, the impact of suicide on different groups of veterans varies.
, for example, male veterans have a higher suicide rate than female veterans, and veterans with psychiatric diagnoses have a suicide rate more than twice as high as the average veteran.
in the historically stigmatized group of transgender veterans, not only did suicide rates be higher than among veterans of the same sex, but the average age at which suicides occurred was smaller.
same time, current limited data show that people with gay, lesbian or bisexual sexual orientation (i.e., sexual minority SM) also have a higher rate of suicide attempts in their lifetimes and a higher corresponding risk of suicide death.
but no studies have yet been conducted to assess the risk of suicide death, including among veterans SM groups.
we can't help but wonder how the suicide death rate among the veterans SM population compares to the suicide mortality rate among the general population and veterans. To this end, the research team from several universities in the United States carried out the corresponding retrospective queue study.
results were published in JAMA Network Open, a sub-journal.
the study, a retrospective population-based queue study, used data on 8.1 million U.S. veterans registered with the Veterans Health Administration between 1999.10.01 and 2017.09.30.
study found that compared to the U.S. population in general and veterans in general, the veterans SM group had a rough and age-adjusted mortality rate from all deaths and suicides.
at least one SM group of 96,893 veterans, with an average age of 46.
68 per cent of them were men and 70 per cent were white.
3.5 per cent of the 12,591 deaths were suicides.
the average U.S. population, the suicide mortality rate among veterans is significantly higher (standardized mortality ratio is 4.50).
suicides were the fifth leading cause of death among veterans in 2017 (3.8 percent of deaths) and the 10th leading cause of death among the general population (1.7 percent of deaths).
rate of crude suicide among the SM group of veterans (82.5 per 100,000 years) was higher than that of the general veterans (37.7 per 100,000 years).
the results of the above-mentioned queue study show that the veterans' sexual minorities are at greater risk of suicide than the general population and the general veterans of the United States.
further research is needed in the future to determine how best to prevent suicidal tendencies among the veteran minority.
