NIMS cooperated with RIKEN to successfully synthesize the longest bottle brush polymer (Bottlebrush Polymers) in history.
As a new type of polymer material, bottle brush polymer has attracted people’s attention.
It consists of a main chain and multiple side chains, and polymers with various chemical compositions can be designed by selecting side chains.
Traditional synthesis The method has problems such as monomer reactivity and mixing of trace impurities.
Therefore, the extendable length is on the order of nanometers, and the maximum length is slightly larger than 1 μm.
This time, the researchers successfully synthesized the longest bottle brush polymer in history through the designed cyclopentadiene monomer, with a length of 7μm, which is about 3.
8 times the longest value so far.
By combining the two types of polymerization methods, the cyclopentadiene part of the monomer undergoes ring-opening metathesis polymerization to obtain the main chain structure, and then ATRP polymerization is performed on the side chain to obtain the side chain brush, and the bottle brush polymer is successfully obtained.
By changing the type of monomers polymerized by side chain ATRP, the researchers obtained four Bottlebrush Polymers with different side chains.
The above method can synthesize various bottle brush polymers with controlled length, diameter and chemical properties.
In the future, researchers hope to develop a material with both flexibility and low friction by making full use of this bottle brush polymer, and hope that the bottle brush polymer can achieve a low friction surface by coating the surface.
