The effect of vitamin D supplementation on the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remains controversial because most randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are smaller or report only the effects of low-dose vitamin DIn a recent study published in journal Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of RCT and assessed the role of vitamin D supplements in the prevention of T2DMtwo researcherssearched the databases of Pubmed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and cochrane libraries from the database to September 15, 2019The RCT, which the researchers included, reported on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the prevention of T2DM for at least a yearTwo independent researchers extracted the data and reported risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)The main outcome of the meta-analysis was the incidence of T2DMthe analysis included nine RCTs (43,559 participants)The average age (SD) is 63.5 (6.7) yearsCompared to placebo, the RR of vitamin D was 0.96 (95% CI was 0.90-1.03); In the medium to high dose (1000IU/d) trials, all trials were conducted in prediabetes subjects, with a RR of 0.88 (95% CI was 0.79-0.99) compared to placebosConversely, low-dose tests in the sample of the general population did not show a reduction in risk (RR 1.02 (95% CI is 0.94-1.10);in prediabetes patients, moderate to high doses (1000 IU/d) instead of low doses of vitamin D supplementation significantly reduce the risk of T2DM
