    Johns Hopkins University found thousands of unknown chemicals in e-cigarettes

    Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have discovered that e-cigarette aerosols contain thousands of unknown chemicals and substances that are not disclosed by manufacturers, including industrial chemicals and caffeine


    This research is the first to apply an advanced fingerprint technology for identifying chemicals in food and wastewater to vapor liquids and aerosols

    Previous research on electronic cigarettes specifically looked for evidence of harmful chemicals in traditional cigarettes


    The team used a chemical fingerprinting technique based on liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry to test four popular products: Mi-Salt, Vuse, Juul and Blu


    They found thousands of unknown chemical substances in the e-cigarette liquid, and the number of compounds in the aerosol increased significantly


    The lead author of the study, Mina Tehrani, a postdoctoral fellow at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, said: “One of the main ways e-cigarettes are marketed is that their working temperature is lower than the combustion temperature.
