South Korean telecommunications company KT won a contract
in the Philippines for a 53 billion won ($47 million) fiber optic cable project.
Under the contract, KT will be responsible for the construction of the fiber optic network in the northern region of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, for local internet service provider Converge ICT Solutions
.
The project is part of Converge's
plan to deploy a fiber optic network across the country.
The Philippines is made up of about 7,000 islands, and depending on the region, the speed of the internet is sporadic and fragmented, and the company hopes to overcome this
problem with fiber-to-the-home.
Korea Telecom said the 1,570-kilometer cables, covering Luzon's 53 million residents, will be deployed in urban areas and major highways
, according to Korea Telecom.
In addition, the telecom company said it has built 5,500 kilometers of cable outside South Korea, such as Myanmar and Bangladesh, and will provide construction and optimization services
for the Philippines.
