In response, a team led by Professor Jia Jianping of Neurology at Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, published a paper that comprehensively studied the prevalence, risk factors and management status of dementia and mild cognitive impairment in adults over 60 years of age in China.
Screenshot Source: The Lancet Public Health This is a national cross-sectional study that randomly selected 96 locations in 12 provinces and cities between March 10, 2015 and December 26, 2018, with a sample of 46,011 adults ≥60 years of age, better reflecting China's geographical region, urbanization, economic development, and gender and age distribution.
subjects were given information including lifestyle, medical history, medication, family history, and were tested for professional neuropsychology.
the prevalence of dementia (Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and other dementias) and mild cognitive impairment is very high in China.
Among ≥ 60-year-olds in China, the prevalence of age- and gender-adjusted dementia is about 6.0%, alzheimer's disease is 3.9%, vascular dementia is 1.6%, and other dementia is 0.5%.
this equates to 15.07 million people aged ≥60 in China with dementia, 9.83 million with Alzheimer's disease, 3.92 million with vascular dementia and 1.32 million with other types of dementia.
prevalence varies from region to region, with rates of 6.3 per cent, 4.7 per cent and 7.5 per cent in northern, southern and western China, respectively.

Red - All Dementia, Blue - Alzheimer's Disease, Green - Vascular Dementia, Purple - Other Dementias; and Number and Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment among Older People of Different Ages in China (C) (Photo: Source: Reuters) China≥ The overall prevalence of mild cognitive impairment among people aged 60 is about 15.5%, which means 38.77 million people in China.
have similar risk factors for dementia and mild cognitive impairment.
, we have to deal with: old age, gender (female) and parental dementia history factors.
team noted that aging is accompanied by changes in the brain, including atrophy (especially the sea mass), imbalances in the production and degradation of β amyloid proteins, the activation of inflammation, and the decline of neurons in memory-related regions.
prevalence is higher in women of all ages, possibly due to reduced estrogen and related hormones after menopause and differences in benign brain structure.
family history of dementia increases the genetic susceptivity of the disease.
Risk factors for dementia and mild cognitive impairment in 60-year-olds in China≥ (source: sources: references; drawing: new medical perspectives) are also linked to up to nine risk factors that can change: rural residents, short educational hours, widowed or divorced or living alone, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease.
In response to the fact that rural areas are a risk factor, the team says this may be due to shorter educational hours in rural areas, weaker medical resources in rural areas, poorer diets in rural areas, higher rates of combined diseases, and possibly the reason for the disparity.
and the link between marital status and dementia suggests the cognitive benefits of social communication.
and the management of dementia is not optimistic.
contrasts with such a large patient population, the majority of people with dementia are not diagnosed and adequately treated, and there is a lack of professionally trained caregivers to care for them.
of 2,766 people with dementia and their families, 1974 (71.4%) had never been diagnosed with dementia.
The majority of patients and their families (65.1 per cent) held the view that "old people forgetfulness is normal, but not a disease", while others were due to financial difficulties (19.7 per cent) and a sense of shame (15.2 per cent).
14.4 percent of the 2,766 patients who received information took cholinesterase inhibitors, meth, or brain-health-promoting drugs.
care, the vast majority are spousal care (83.9 per cent), followed by children (10.7 per cent), nannies or carers (5.4 per cent).
75.31 per cent of people with dementia do not know what dementia is or what a reasonable treatment is.
are similar in patients with mild cognitive impairment, with 97.2% not receiving treatment and 99.2% notioning that mild cognitive impairment can develop dementia.
the paper, the team proposed that China establish a comprehensive public health system for dementia prevention and control, based on the high prevalence of dementia and its burden.
such as the establishment of national monitoring networks, regular ≥ assessments of people over the age of 50 and monitoring of disease progression and dementia mortality.
Of course, the primary goal today remains prevention, and it is critical to develop prevention strategies to stop or slow the progression of dementia, especially for patients with mild cognitive impairment, which we have identified as adjustable risk factors.
, it is imperative to raise public awareness of dementia.
