Researchers recently made a major discovery-14 new species of shrews, which are the largest number of new mammals described in scientific papers since 1931
Shrews (qú jīng) belong to the Shrews family of the order Shrews.
So far, 461 species of shrews have been discovered-they are found almost all over the world
"This is an exciting discovery, but it can also be frustrating at times," said Estestine, the curator of mammals and an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University's Museum of Natural Sciences
The research team conducted extensive genetic and morphological data collection on new specimens collected from 2010 to 2018 and old specimens collected in 1916.
This discovery is an important milestone in Estestine's research
Now he feels that he has mastered the diversity of shrews on the island.
"Taxonomy is the basis of many biological research and conservation efforts
